This project was fortunate to be one of the 85 shortlisted projects out of more than 400 entries worldwide. The competition asked for economical and sustainable housing solutions for a single occupant home for $30,000. This solution proposed utilizing existing infill sites that would be difficult for most other building types. The proposed design has a similar narrow front gabled facade as many surrounding homes, yet is broken up with the clerestory and in plan to give the illusion of a larger scale. The simplicity of their use also helps tie them to the existing fabric. A clerestory was added for the dual purpose of adding more natural light and allowing the ceiling in the living area and bedroom to be vaulted up. These make the space feel larger.
